Forensic medicine education and medico legal services in Bangladesh- K P Saha- Comilla Medical College, Bangladesh

K P Saha and Elias Bin Akber

Bangladesh is one of the hugely populated developing countries of the world and in South Asia with about 165 million population size and huge burden of medico legal works. Quality in forensic medicine education and medico legal services of the country are not up to the mark in comparison to international standard. Medical students and doctors are not interested in the subject in the country. This paper has tried to discuss present scenario, problems, prospects and recommendations to improve the situation of forensic medicine education and medico legal services of Bangladesh. Forensic medicine is taught here in undergraduate level of medical study in all medical colleges, but crisis of experienced teacher is extreme country wide. There is limited scope of post graduate study, but students are not interested to build their carrier in forensic medicine. Different types of medico legal services are provided at different level i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities of the country, but most of the service providers are not adequately qualified for this special service. There is lack of laws in this regard also. Medical education and medico legal service are facing very difficult situation due to lack of forensic expert in the country. It will require policy level proper decision and their implementation to improve the situation. It is also very much important to take some measures to attract new physicians toward this subject to solve the acute expert and teacher crisis in forensic medicine in Bangladesh.
